Hello, my name is Charlie and I just bought a male cockatiel about a week ago.
I do not know much about cockatiels and would like some help by anyone that
is willing to help me. I put many toys in his cage and try and talk to him a
lot. I feed him when he needs to be fed. I want to know how to get my bird
to talk or just make some kind of noise. I really want to know if my bird is
happy.

Thanks,

Charlie

I'm sure he is happy. Was he hand fed? If it is a male he will talk in time
but if it's a female she probably won't talk but she'll whistle various
tunes/sounds. I have 5 cockatiels. 2 males and 3 females. The males talk
constantly and whistle the Laurel and Hardy tune and other various whistling
sounds but they do talk a lot. The females don't do much but they are really
loving birds. Most birds that talk seem to do so when you are near but not
looking at them at first. Eventually that will change. They all LOVE to have
their heads scratched. They also like to eat noodles, potatoes and crackers.
Just talk to it and scratch it and it'll be happy! I leave my TV on during
the day if I am not going to be around much and that seems to help get them
going. Have fun and let me know how he's doing. Good Luck!

Be patient and don't move too quickly towards him. Also don't ever yell at
him or be loud around him. They scare easily. Does he bite? I just bought my
second Quaker parrot (about the same size as a cockatiel) and he still is a
little bit shy or afraid. Don't let him know you're scared of him if you can
help it. Show him who's boss but be gentle. It all takes time. Was he hand
fed? Where are you located out of curiosity? I'm in Minnesota.

Charlie, There are many websites that can help you get really good
information on cockatiels. I have 3 that were Hurricane Charley
rescues, 2 males and 1 female. I would suggest you start with
www.birdboard.com and go into the Cockatiel section but read all the
other posts also. It's a friendly bunch of people and they have an
Ask the Experts section too. You can lurk without registering but it
is fun to get involved and there are many young people there also.
I think you would have fun there and learn how to train your tiel as
well as what types of seed/pellet mixes are best and what kind of
treats and veggies to give it. It is not unusual for a new bird to
take a few weeks to adjust to being in a new home. Just keep talking
to it and building trust- Good luck! Gini

My cockatiels almost never shut up! I talk to them all the time like they
are humans and I repeat the same things over and over. The first thing to do
is teach him to step up onto your finger (if you don't already know that).
Say step up and nudge him under his to step up. I know he probably doesn't
let you get too close but he will in time. It's hard but try to be patient.
Hey, my cockatiels just had 2 babies! They are so cute. I want to hand feel
them but I am scared of them cause they are so little. I also just became a
grandma again the same day. My daughter had a baby boy! It's been quite the
week!!!!
